Refugee Week 2017

As part of Bradford Refugee Week, the Millside Centre hosted a film screening of the ‘The Good Lie’ – which told the story of the lost boys of South Sudan. After fleeing civil war and living in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya for 13 years, they finally get the opportunity to settle in the U.S where they are met by Carrie Davies (Reese Witherspoon) who is charged with finding them jobs. It’s a powerful story of hope, pain, joy and setbacks as the group endeavour to rebuild their lives in a new environment. The film screening was organised to highlight some of the challenges refugees fleeing war and conflict face. We also had a short presentation from Kongosi, who works with new arrivals of refugees in the city of Bradford to integrate and find their place, and connected the movie with the resettlement programme in the UK context. She talked about her role, some of the challenges encountered by her clients as they adjust to a new country, lessons learned and what motivates her as a former refugee to give back. It was great seeing new faces in our centre and most people commented that they really enjoyed the event and how suitable the venue was.
